Information on individual state activities during Arthritis Awareness Week follows:-

Arthritis ACT -

26 March 9.30 - 11.00am - Arthritis Awareness week will be launched by Chief Minister Katy Gallagher on Monday, at the Reception Room, ACT Legislative Assembly, London Circuit, Canberra City. At this event there will be a Tai Chi demonstration, a talk about Arthritis by Arthritis ACT project officer Nataly McCann, a performance by the ACT Austrian Choir and morning tea. Arthritis ACT will also be conducting displays in shopping centres and chemists throughout the week.

24 March 9.00am - 11.30am - "Get A Grip" on Osteoarthritis Seminar

Arthritis SA -

In the lead up to Arthritis Week there will be a symposium for Health Professionals on Saturday 17 March, where Arthritis Week will be promoted.

21 March 10.00am to 12.30pm - Osteoarthritis seminar for the public, Arthritis SA, 118 Richmond Road, Marleston.

20 March 10.00am to 12.30pm - Healthy Bones and Joints information morning, Yankalilla Youth and Community Centre, Main Road, Yankalilla.

30 March 9.00am - 3.00pm - Display, information at Rundle Mall, CBD.


Arthritis TAS -

The main focus for the week for Tasmania will be the announcement of the opening their new premises, inviting people to drop in and see the new office or call the 1800 number to speak to our Information Line.


Arthritis VIC -

26 March - Media event in Federation Square, Melbourne. The event will feature a Tai Chi demonstration and (hopefully) some sports celebrities doing Tai Chi (still working on that). 1 April - We are closing out Arthritis Awareness Week with our 'Much Ado About Pain' Consumer Conference. The event leads in to the Australian Pain Society 32nd Annual Scientific Meeting being held from Sunday, 1 April - Wednesday, 4 April.


Arthritis WA -

31 March 9:45am - Dr David Hunter presents a public seminar on Osteoarthritis at Challenge Stadium as part of Arthritis Awareness Week. The Osteoarthritis seminar will cover prevention tactics, conservative management and address 'what you need to know and what you should do'.

Dr Hunter is a Professor of Medicine at Sydney University and consultant rheumatologist at North Sydney Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre and Royal North Shore Hospital.

Dr Hunter has gained worldwide recognition as one of the leading researchers in osteoarthritis. Dr Hunter has over 220 peer reviewed publications in international journals.

27 March 5.00pm - Arthritis Awareness Week Launch at Marrara Stadium attended by footballers, coaches, and a physiotherapist

Free Come and Try sessions at Fitness Centres all week as follows:

BodyFit NT: are offering free come and try passes to seniors who have never attended a BodyFit NT hydrotherapy class before. So come and try warm water exercises at the Tropicus Centre, Caryota Court, Coconut Grove. Hydrotherapy times are 10.00 am Monday, 10.15 Tuesday and Thursday and 9.30 on Wednesday. Please arrive 5 minutes before the class time. BodyFit NT has reserved 5 spots per class for Arthritis Awareness Week only, so call BodyFit now on 8981 2886 and book in.

Fitness Unlimited: invites AONT members, 50 years and over, to come and try their Heart Starters class at the Fitness Centre at Charles Darwin University. Heart Starters is ideal for seniors because it combines low impact cardio movement with basic strength exercises. Phone 8946 6971 for more information and class times. Present your AONT membership card for your free class.

TimeOut Fitness: at 100 Mitchell Street, Darwin: is offering 50 free passes to all seniors to attend their Seniors Classes. Classes start at 10.30am each day. Monday, Wednesday and Friday classes offer a non-impact full body workout suitable for more mature seniors, while Tuesday and Thursday classes are "Senior Weights". The offer is open until the end of April 2012. Call TimeOut on 8941 8711.

Palmerston Recreation Centre - YMCA: is offering a 50% discount for AONT members to their Seniors Class at 10.00 am on Monday and Wednesday during Arthritis Awareness Week. Call 02 8935 9777 for more information.

2 April - April Falls Day

Last but not least - whatever you do to keep fit and manage your arthritis, it also helps to prevent falls. Warm water exercises, body balance, Tai Chi, senior's classes at the gym, all help to strengthen your body and improve your balance.

Neil Cook will give a Tai Chi demonstration at Coconut Grove Seniors Community Hall from 10.00 - 11.00am on April Falls Day.
