RESEARCH GRANTS PROGRAM 2009

Applications for 2009 Arthritis Australia research grants will be available on line from 12 May 2008 and will be accepted through to 12 July 2008. 

All applicants will be notified of the results between December 2008 and January 2009.


Along with education and assistance, Arthritis Australia spearheads the effort to further our knowledge of arthritis and to search for cures. Much of our work is directed toward raising funds to provide grants, fellowships and scholarships. Professor Graeme Jones is the medical director of Arthritis Australia and chair of the Research Grants Assessment Committee.


Arthritis Australia conducts an annual research grants program open to both national and international researchers, and funds the chair of rheumatology at the University of Sydney. Fellowships


ARA Practitioner Fellowship - $50,000 



(one or possibly more depending on funding priorities). This is available to members of the ARA who wish to come into research and aims to facilitate entry back into research. The track record of applicant is not a pre-requisite but the applicant will have to have an innovative, feasible and well designed research project undertaken in collaboration with an established research unit.


Heald Fellowship - $50,000 


(preference for research overseas but Australian-based research will be considered)


Grants in Aid/Project Grants   



ARA Pediatric Rheumatology - $15,000



ARA Project Grant - $50,000


(only available to members of the ARA or their teams)


Clitheroe Foundation Award - $20,000


(preference for research into the understanding of and /or improved therapy for HLA B27 disease including ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, IBD arthritis and SAPPHO)



Kilimanjaro – Ascent for Arthritis Grant - $35,000 – $50,000


(preference for research into ankylosing spondylitis)


Ray and Pam Robinson Award - $40,000



(for research into rheumatology)


Rosalind Griggs Award - $50,000


(for research into osteoarthritis)



SA LSS Support Group Grant - $15,000



(1st preference for research into lupus, scleroderma or Sjogrens.


2nd preference for research into systemic inflammatory disease)



Scleroderma Australia Grants - $60,000


(one grant for $50,000 plus one for pilot/seed for $10,000)

As well as our national research program, some of our state affiliate offices provide financial support for local research projects and academic rheumatology initiatives. These include the Chair of Rheumatology at Queensland University and senior lecturer positions at Sydney’s Westmead Hospital and the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria Centre for Rheumatic Diseases.


Guidelines and information regarding submission of research award applications



The research awards application  must  be submitted as an email attachment. In addition to submitting an application, researchers must submit one hard copy of their completed certification page (page four of the application form). Both the application and certification must be lodged with Arthritis Australia by the closing date. Applicants are also responsible for providing referees' reports for scholarships and fellowships. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.


Completed applications should be submitted to Arthritis Australia as an email attachment to: info@arthritisaustralia.com.au  




Due to funding limitations, there is an expectation that all applicants will also apply elsewhere for funding.


Arthritis Australia grants qualify for RIBG funding.

drilldown FELLOWSHIPS
The Heald Fellowship is available for research programs both overseas and in Australia. Please note that this is for one year only and there will be no renewals, except in rare circumstances e.g. part-time research.
drilldown SCHOLARSHIPS
Arthritis Australia offers scholarships for young science and medical graduates to undertake thesis studies into arthritis and related disorders at recognised universities. These scholarships provide research training to doctorate or masters level and are designed to develop the intellectual and technical expertise required for a career involving laboratory and clinical investigation. Scholarships are intended, in general, to support basic and clinical research training within Australian research units and as a precursor to more advanced study in Australia and overseas. Scholarships are for one year and are renewable for three years, depending on progress and funding priorities.
drilldown GRANTS IN AID AND PROJECT GRANTS
Grants are typically for short-term projects with well defined aims that can be achieved within a 12 month period. In some cases these grants in aid address particular questions and may complement larger established programs of research. The amount allocated is generally in the range of $10,000 - $15,000 per grant for new investigator grants. A maximum of four project grants valued up to $50,000 will be available, including grants focusing on rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Selection is by review process. It is expected that an explicit, justified budget will be provided as part of your application.
