Easy to Open (ETO) & Ease of Use (EOU)

Detailed product and packaging accessibility testing, conducted with consumers with functional limitations like arthritis.

Easy To Open (ETO) testing - for packaging

Easy to Open (ETO) testing is a more detailed report than the ISR, it uses consumer testing and feedback. The report covers all the areas the ISR does, but also provides you with further information regarding consumer abilities as well as their insights. This type of testing is conducted with consumers who have functional limitations such as arthritis. Testing is conducted this way, as tasks that might be difficult to a regular consumer will be impossible for someone with these limitations and will reflect the experience that the ageing population will have with your product.

ETO testing is a pass or fail test and if your packaging passes testing, you can then apply for the use of the ETO certification logo on your labelling to educate consumers about the benefits of your design (Note: there is an additional licensing fee associated with logo use). This can be important, because we have found that when consumers have had great difficulty with a packaging format they are not willing to try it again unless there are encouraging signs that the format has changed. The independent certification can reassure consumers that the product is easy to open and that it is not just a marketing ploy.

If your product passes this testing then it is also considered to be best practice on the Packaging Accessibility Rating Database.

Uses:
ETO testing uses consumer testing and is a more detailed report than the ISR. Companies can use this type of test to identify consumer issues with a packaging to inform its redesign. ETO testing can also be used to independently prove to users that packaging is accessible and easy to open. The use of the logo after certification can be a helpful way of communicating the products benefits to markets like the ageing population.

Ease of Use (EOU) testing - for products

Ease of Use (EOU) testing is a detailed accessibility report, which uses consumer testing and feedback. Like Easy to Open testing, EOU testing is a pass or fail test and if your product passes testing, you can then apply for the use of the EOU certification logo on your labelling to educate consumers about the benefits of your design (Note: there is an additional licensing fee associated with logo use). The independent certification can reassure consumers that the product is easy to use.

Uses:
EOU testing uses consumer testing and is a detailed report. Companies can use this type of test to identify consumer issues with a product to then inform the redesign or development of a new product. EOU testing can also be used to independently prove to users that a product is accessible. The use of the logo after certification can be a helpful way of communicating the products benefits to markets such as the ageing population.
