EOFY Appeal

Your tax-deductible gift this EOFY funds Australian research, advocacy and resources that changes lives for the 7 million of us living with arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions.

Your gift, at work

Depending on your designation choice, your donation funds the vital work being done by Arthritis Australia, including advocacy, trusted information and research.

Whatever you can give, it changes what’s possible. Every dollar counts.

The scale of what we're up against.

When most Australians hear the word “arthritis,” they think of old age. It’s one of the most persistent myths we work against. and it gets in the way of almost everything we’re trying to change.

Australians live with arthritis or a musculoskeletal condition – more than 1 in 4 of us, of every age, including children.

of Australia’s entire burden of disease is attributable to arthritis – with tens of billions of dollars in annual cost to our health system.

children and young adults aged 0-24 are affected by juvenile arthritis in Australia

Arthritis is not one disease, it’s more than 100, from rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis to juvenile arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout and anklylosing spondylitis. Each one is different. Each one is underfunded. And by 2040, the number of Australians living with arthritis is projected to rise by 30%.

We are working to change their lives for the better. Your gift is how.

At 66, Tom starts every morning the same way - in negotiation with his right knee

“Pain fluctuates,” he says. “Some days are good, some days are not so good.”
Tom was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in his twenties. The fluctuating pain is one thing. The flare-ups are another. “It’s also a condition that has flare-ups,” Tom explains. “When I get a flare-up, sometimes I need crutches to walk.” There is no schedule. No trigger he can reliably name.

Tom Buttel lives with osteoarthritis

Mobility is the other constant negotiation. “Lack of mobility is something I deal with. I just having to be careful,” he says. “I don’t want to have a fall. So, it changes your lifestyle.”

What makes arthritis particularly isolating is its invisibility. Tom looks well. People see him and assume everything is fine. For years, he carried all of it alone. “The most important part of my journey with osteoarthritis in my knee was gaining the knowledge to self-manage it,” he says. “That took a bit of time, but I embraced that knowledge and I’ve used it daily. And that helps.”

But the pain hasn’t gone away. The flare-ups still come.

Tom is a practical about what lies ahead. “I don’t think we’ll have a cure in my lifetime, but I’d like to think one day we do have a cure where we can reverse the damage that’s done to arthritic joints.”

Where your donation goes.

Research

Your gift can power the Arthritis Australia National Research Program, the largest non-government source of funding for arthritis research in the country. Every year, we run a competitive grant round assessed by an independent panel of leading clinicians and scientists, with every proposal rigorously evaluated on scientific merit, consumer relevance and likelihood of real-world impact.

Your gift powers evidence-based resources that Australians living with arthritis can trust. The first google search, trying to sift through the huge amount of online information to find what you can rely on after a diagnosis can feel overwhelming.

Our suite of consumer information websites — MyRA, MyOA, MyPSA and MyAS — received over 812,000 visits from people looking for accurate, expert reviewed information about their condition. We published new resources on gout in English, Chinese Arabic, and other languages, culturally appropriate resources tailored to Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Pasifika communities, because reliable information should reach everyone.

Every one of those visits, every one of those translated fact sheets is made possible because – you chose to do so.

Your gift powers Arthritis Australia’s work as the national peak body, the voice representing millions of Australians in the halls of power.

In the last year alone,   we have advocated to the Prime Minister and brought consumer advocates, clinicians and experts to Parliament to speak to politicians, policymakers and peak groups, building the case for change.  We’re leading the push for a dedicated Medical Research Future Fund mission for arthritis and musculoskeletal diseases. This is the biggest opportunity we’ve ever had to shift national research investment permanently.

None of this advocacy work receives government funding. It exists because of supporters like you.
