Landmark Research Mission gives hope to 7 million Australians living with the pain of arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions

Media Release

Arthritis Australia has welcomed the Albanese Government’s announcement today of a dedicated Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) Mission of $100 million for Arthritis and Musculoskeletal conditions – calling it a landmark moment for the 7 million Australians living with these painful, and often misunderstood conditions.

The new Mission represents the most significant standalone Federal Government investment in arthritis and musculoskeletal research in Australia’s history. It represents a major step forward in addressing conditions that affect Australians, mostly of working age, and cost the health system over $16 billion a year, through widespread impact on productivity and workforce participation. The number of Australians with arthritis is projected to increase by 31% by 2040.

Arthritis Australia CEO, Louise Hardy, said the Medical Research Future Fund Mission announcement brings new hope to Australians living with over 100 different types of arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions, ranging from osteoarthritis and back pain, to autoimmune illnesses.

“This is a truly historic day for our community. The announcement gives hope to millions of Australians of all ages living with the pain of arthritis. We are deeply grateful to the Albanese Government for listening to our community and making this commitment. This Mission will drive the research breakthroughs we so urgently need — from earlier diagnosis and improved treatments to the hope of cures.”

Analysis by Research Australia, commissioned by Arthritis Australia, projects that over the next decade an Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Mission could generate a twofold reduction in the health system and productivity burden from these widespread conditions. It would also deliver a net return of $361 million to the economy.

“An Arthritis and Musculoskeletal research Mission provides the opportunity we have been waiting for to improve quality of life for those living with these debilitating conditions, reduce the strain on our healthcare system, and strengthen workforce participation,” Ms Hardy said.

“There has been extraordinary collaboration from across the sector over many years of advocacy. The whole community has spoken with one voice,” Ms Hardy said. “Arthritis Australia, state and territory arthritis organisations and other patient groups, the Australian Rheumatology Association, clinicians, researchers and research institutes have been united in advocacy for this crucial goal.

“We also sincerely thank the Parliamentary Friends of Arthritis, and the many people living with arthritis who have emailed their local member and senators sharing their stories.
“Research Australia, the national voice for health and medical research, has partnered with Arthritis Australia over a number of years to uncover the unmet needs of people with arthritis and generate the evidence base for investing in a Mission.

“Our academic partners at the Monash University Musculoskeletal Health Unit have also undertaken critical work – projecting the rising burden, impact and economic cost of these conditions,” adds Ms Hardy.

Arthritis Australia looks forward to working closely with the Government and the sector on the design and implementation of the Mission to ensure it delivers meaningful outcomes for people living with arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions across Australia.
